England bounced back from their nine-wicket defeat by New Zealand in their World Cup opener with a comprehensive 137-run victory over Bangladesh on Tuesday in Dharamsala. Dawid Malan bludgeoned 140 before Reece Topley destroyed the Bangladesh top order, taking 4-43, as England posted 364-9 and then bowled Bangladesh out for 227 in 47 overs.
England’s innings was built around a 143-run opening partnership between Malan and Jonny Bairstow (51), while Joe Root (57) and Jos Buttler (46) also made significant contributions. Bangladesh’s bowlers were disciplined in the latter stages of England’s innings, with Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan taking four wickets each, but the damage had already been done.

Bangladesh’s chase got off to a disastrous start as they lost their top four batsmen for just 36 runs. Topley was the chief destroyer, with the left-arm quick bowling Liton Das, Anamul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan. Mushfiqur Rahim (71) and Mahmudullah (41) offered some resistance, but England were always in control of the match and completed a comfortable victory.

Bangladesh were fined 5 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. This was the first time Bangladesh had been fined for a slow over-rate in this World Cup.
The ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel states that players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Shakib Al Hasan pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

England’s victory was a much-needed boost after their defeat by New Zealand in their opening match. They will now be looking to build on this momentum when they face Australia on Saturday. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their performance. They will need to improve their batting if they are to challenge the top teams in this World Cup.
