The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly expediting travel arrangements for Shreyas Iyer’s family members to reach Sydney, where the Indian vice-captain continues to be under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Iyer suffered internal bleeding caused by a rib injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday and remains under close medical supervision.

According to The Times of India, the BCCI has stepped in to ensure that one of Iyer’s family members can be by his side as soon as possible.

“Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. As of now, it’s not clear whether both parents will go, but someone will be with him at the earliest,” a source revealed. Reports suggest that Iyer’s sister was initially expected to travel, with all necessary paperwork already in motion, though one of his parents might accompany her depending on availability.

Doctors in Sydney are monitoring Iyer’s condition round the clock, as the focus remains on controlling the internal bleeding. He is expected to stay in the ICU for at least the next 48 hours, though the duration may be extended if his condition doesn’t show significant improvement.

The injury occurred dramatically during Australia’s innings. Harshit Rana delivered a short-of-length ball that Alex Carey attempted to loft, only for Iyer to sprint backwards from point and take a superb diving catch. However, in the process of landing, he appeared to hurt his left rib area, immediately clutching it in pain.

Following the incident, medical staff assessed him in the dressing room, where his vitals reportedly dropped, prompting immediate hospitalisation.

In an official statement, the BCCI confirmed: “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib-cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Scans revealed a splenic laceration. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his progress.”
