The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly weighing stricter off-field rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL), with a particular focus on the presence of players’ partners at team hotels. The proposed move comes amid growing concerns over discipline, professionalism and the need to protect the league’s anti-corruption protocols.

According to recent reports, the issue has gained traction this season after several high-profile cricketers were frequently seen with their girlfriends at team hotels and around match-day activities. The increased visibility has reportedly prompted internal discussions within the board, which is now considering whether clearer boundaries are needed in the IPL environment.
A BCCI official, quoted in a report by Jagran, confirmed that the matter is being actively discussed and is expected to come up in the next board meeting. The official said there was no issue with wives and family members staying with players in hotels, but added that the board needs to be “a little more serious” about girlfriends, suggesting the current setup may require tighter oversight.

The official also pointed out that similar guidelines introduced for the Indian team had already brought more structure to player conduct, although those rules were mainly designed around spouses and immediate family members. In the IPL, however, the franchise-based structure complicates enforcement, especially with 10 privately run teams operating in different environments and on different schedules.

The report further stated that the board is looking at how earlier IPL practices have changed over time. The official claimed that girlfriends were previously not allowed to stay in players’ hotels, but that the trend has shifted in recent seasons. The matter, according to the report, was also discussed with an IPL anti-corruption unit officer, who reportedly noted that wives and “officially announced girlfriends” are now being allowed to stay together.

Another concern for the board is the influence of social media, with some partners potentially sharing sensitive information publicly. That, officials believe, could create avoidable risks in a tournament already monitored closely for integrity issues.
With the IPL continuing to grow in scale and attention, the BCCI now appears ready to revisit off-field guidelines and introduce more clearly defined rules for player accommodations and team hotel access.
