The BCCI held a high-level review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3, 2026, with the development of emerging Indian talent among the key topics discussed. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman and other senior officials attended the meeting. One of the major talking points was 15-year-old left-handed batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose rapid rise has caught the attention of Indian cricket.
The BCCI is keen to ensure that his early success is managed carefully as he begins his international career. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his T20I debut against England on July 4, 2026, becoming the youngest male cricketer to represent India at the international level. His remarkable IPL 2026 campaign had already established him as one of the most exciting young talents in the country.
Playing 16 matches, Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. His campaign included a century, five fifties and 72 sixes, the most by a batter in a single IPL season. He also collected the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes awards. “We want Vaibhav’s relevance, or any player of his stature, to continue and serve as Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends,” Saikia said after the meeting.

The BCCI is not looking at Sooryavanshi’s development purely from a cricketing perspective. According to Saikia, the board is monitoring his technical skills, mental preparation and overall progress to ensure that his rapid rise does not lead to burnout or complacency.
“So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He’s monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future,” Devajit Saikia added.

Sooryavanshi has already delivered at international level. During India’s 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe, he scored 151 runs in three matches and was named Player of the Series. The teenager has also created history in domestic cricket. He became the youngest batter to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history at 15 years and 157 days, breaking a record that had stood for 57 years.
“You see, the BCCI can be proud that we are promoting a player of the age of 15 years who is already making his mark in the international scenario,” Devajit Saikia said.

However, the BCCI’s focus extends beyond Sooryavanshi. Saikia revealed that around 10-15 young players have been placed in a targeted group and are being monitored regularly by VVS Laxman and the CoE.
“We are looking at all the players, not only Vaibhav’s relevance, but there are about 10-15 players who are in our targeted group,” Devajit Saikia concluded. The objective is clear: turn promising young talent into long-term international stars rather than allowing early success to become a brief flash of brilliance.
