The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to conduct re-examination for the umpires after around 38 umpires moved to court for being not allowed for the re-examinations between 2011 and 2015.

Earlier on June 12, 2018, K. Bapu Chaitanya, an ACA (Andhra Cricket Association) umpire, filed a writ petition against BCCI in the Hyderabad High Court to challenge the board’s decision to disapprove them for reappearing in the Level 2 Umpires examination. Moreover, he also called for a stay order on the umpiring test that was scheduled in Nagpur on June 17.

Chaitanya had cleared the Level 2 written exam but failed the practical assessment. However, there were no further repeat exams held.

In his petition, Chaitanya wrote, “I have taken the Level I examination in 2011 and have cleared the same with more than 80 marks as was required by the BCCI and thereafter have undertaken a refresher course in 2012 and cleared the same with more than 85 marks thereby became eligible for taking Level 2 examinations. In 2013, I have also cleared the Level 2 – Written Examination with 92.5 marks out of 100 but in 2015 I have failed the practical examination. No immediate repeater exams were held.

“I humbly submit that while I [am] waiting to take Level 2 examination, the Respondent [BCCI] has issued a letter BCCI/HQ/01B1/1539/2018 dated 03.05.2018 to all the State Associations notifying of the Level 2 theory examination to be conducted on 17.06.2018 along with a list of 93 candidates who have cleared Level –I refresher examination without listing my name though I have already cleared the Level I refresher. I have approached my Association regarding the same and they have represented my case to the Respondent but there was no response.”

Now, BCCI has decided to conduct the re-examinations for all those candidates, which will be the ‘final opportunity’ for them.

Addressing to all its affiliated units, BCCI interim secretary Amitabh Choudhary sent a circular by mentioning to conduct that re-examination in the first week of August at National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Choudhary wrote in that circulation, “BCCI has decided to provide one final opportunity to all such candidates (irrespective of age and previous attempts), who were unsuccessful in the Umpires Level – 2 Theory, as well as Practical examinations, conducted between 2011 and 2015. A preparatory course will be conducted from 1st to 4th August 2018 and the theory examinations will be conducted on 5th August at KSCA/ NCA Bangalore. The syllabus will be Laws of Cricket (2017 Code) and BCCI Playing Conditions (2017-18), and the question paper will be from the above syllabus.”

It was also added that the result of that examination will be announced along with the theory examination that conducted on June 17, 2018.
