Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured the heaviest defeat in their IPL history after suffering a crushing 89-run loss to Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday night. The dominant victory helped GT secure their ninth win of IPL 2026 and officially confirmed their place in the top two of the points table ahead of the playoffs.

To make matters worse for the five-time champions, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was penalised by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over-rate during the high-pressure clash. It marked Chennai’s second over-rate offence of the season, resulting in a fine of ₹24 lakh for Gaikwad. The remaining members of the playing XI, including Impact Player Kartik Sharma, were also fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever was lower.
In a must-win game for CSK, the decision to bowl first backfired badly as the Gujarat Titans piled up a massive 229/4 in 20 overs. GT openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan completely dominated the Chennai bowling attack with a brilliant 125-run opening stand. Gill smashed 64 off 37 balls, while Sudharsan continued his sensational form with 84 off 53 deliveries.

Jos Buttler then added the finishing touch with a blistering unbeaten 57 off just 27 balls. CSK’s bowling struggled throughout the innings, with Anshul Kamboj enduring a difficult outing after conceding 56 runs in his four overs.

The chase never truly began for Chennai Super Kings. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Sanju Samson for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings, setting the tone for a disastrous batting collapse. Shivam Dube’s explosive 47 off 17 balls briefly entertained the crowd, but GT’s bowling attack remained relentless.
