The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has struck a major commercial deal ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League, signing Google’s AI platform Gemini as a sponsor in an agreement worth ₹270 crore. The three-year partnership once again underlines the IPL’s unmatched pull as a global sporting property and its growing appeal among leading technology companies.

This latest sponsorship adds another strong layer to the IPL’s already formidable commercial ecosystem. Over the years, the league has consistently attracted top-tier global brands, and the Gemini deal further reinforces its position as one of the most lucrative and influential T20 leagues in the world.

Beyond the financial boost, the partnership highlights how the IPL continues to evolve alongside emerging technologies and modern fan engagement trends. Interestingly, Gemini’s entry into the IPL space comes at a time when its biggest rival, ChatGPT, is already associated with the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The presence of competing AI platforms across the IPL and WPL signals a clear shift in sponsorship patterns, with AI brands now seeing Indian cricket as a prime avenue to reach massive, diverse audiences. This trend also reflects cricket’s expanding footprint beyond traditional sponsorship categories like FMCG, automobiles, and telecom.

The BCCI had earlier been seeking new commercial partners after the Indian government barred real-money gaming companies, leading to Dream11’s exit from certain sponsorship roles. Apollo Tyres later stepped in as a jersey sponsor in a high-value deal, while the Tata Group continues as the IPL’s title sponsor, anchoring the league’s commercial stability.

Speaking during the announcement of ChatGPT’s association with the WPL last year, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasised how partnerships with global AI leaders and major brands play a crucial role in enhancing fan experience and driving the growth of Indian cricket, particularly women’s cricket.
