While Team India celebrates their historic T20 World Cup victory, the BCCI is already looking ahead to the next challenges. With the Champions Trophy and World Test Championship final on the horizon, the board has implemented a stricter policy for players aiming for a spot in the Test squad.
According to a PTI report, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has mandated that all players with Test aspirations must participate in domestic tournaments whenever they’re not on national duty. This ensures players remain match-fit and in form for international selection.
However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. The BCCI will grant special consideration to veteran players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. These established stars will have the option to choose whether or not they participate in domestic matches.

The focus, however, is on getting other Test hopefuls valuable playing time. The BCCI is encouraging all other Test contenders to participate in at least one, if not both, of the Duleep Trophy matches scheduled for August. These matches serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Interestingly, the Duleep Trophy selection process has also undergone a change. This year, there won’t be zonal selection committees. Instead, the national selection committee will be solely responsible for picking the Duleep Trophy teams.

Meanwhile, former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has shown his approval for Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the new head coach of Team India. Steyn admires Gambhir’s aggressive playing style and believes he will instill that fighting spirit in the dressing room, particularly among the senior players. Steyn feels such leadership is much needed in modern cricket.
With a stricter domestic participation policy and a new coach known for his aggression, the BCCI is aiming to build a strong and competitive Test squad for the upcoming challenges.
