Indian cricket is facing one of its most unsettling phases in recent years, and the fallout from India’s back-to-back home Test series defeats continues to intensify. A senior BCCI official has now confirmed that the spotlight will not remain solely on the team management—India’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will also be questioned for the ongoing Test debacle.

According to the official, the chief selector’s absence from domestic games “doesn’t matter much,” as all domestic performances are tracked through the central scoring app. However, the numbers tell a more worrying story. The memorable 2–2 Test series against England earlier this year now feels like a distant high point, overshadowed by a complete lack of clarity in India’s strategy on home pitches.
Since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach and Agarkar assumed charge as chief selector, India have been handed two home Test whitewashes—first by New Zealand in 2024 and now by South Africa.

While Gambhir has absorbed a bulk of the criticism, pressure is mounting equally on Agarkar. Since taking over two years ago, he has tried over 30 different cricketers in India’s Test setup—a number that has raised eyebrows regarding consistency and long-term planning.

One of the biggest criticisms of Ajit Agarkar is his limited involvement in domestic cricket. Though he has been a constant presence on overseas tours and during international fixtures, his absence from Ranji Trophy matches has widened the gap between selectors and domestic performers. Debutants like Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy were fast-tracked despite modest first-class numbers. At the same time, proven performers such as Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair, and Abhimanyu Easwaran continued to be overlooked.
“We will speak to the selectors too… and as far as watching domestic games is concerned, every score comes on the app,” the BCCI official told The Times of India.

This raises a critical question: how many emerging talents—like Devdutt Padikkal—might have been identified earlier if domestic cricket had received deeper on-ground attention? As Indian cricket searches for stability, rebuilding trust in the selection system remains one of its biggest challenges.
