On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement, mourning the unfortunate demise of former cricketer Yashpal Sharma at the age of 66 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. Yashpal represented India in 37 ODIs and 42 Tests and played a crucial role in the Indian middle-order from 1979-83. He also served as a national selector for a couple of years and was reappointed to the panel in 2008.
In a statement regarding the same, BCCI wrote: “It is with profound sadness that BCCI has learned of the passing of former India cricketer Shri Yashpal Sharma. The 66-year-old breathed his last in New Delhi on Tuesday. Sharma, who represented the country in 37 Tests and 42 ODIs, scored 2,489 runs in international cricket. He also had 2 centuries and 13 half-centuries to his name. He was a key member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning side.”

It further added, “A brilliant fielder and a gutsy right-handed batsman, Sharma was India’s second-highest run-getter in the tournament, scoring 240 runs which included two half-centuries a brave 89 in India’s opening game against West Indies and a match-winning 61 in the semi-final against England. He played 160 First-Class matches and scored 8933 runs in addition to 1859 runs in List A cricket. He also served as a national selector from 2004 to 2005 and later from 2008 to 2011.”

BCCI [resident, Sourav Ganguly also condoled the death of Yashpal Sharma and extended his support to his family.
Sourav Ganguly said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Yashpal Sharma. We have lost one of our cricketing heroes. “He was a valuable middle-order batsman, a sharp fielder, and an affable person off the field. His contribution to Indian cricket shall always be remembered. I extend my condolences to his family in this hour of grief.”

In his career of 37 Tests, Yashpal Sharma had amassed 1606 runs with the highest score of 140 and he maintained an average was 33.45 runs. In ODI cricket, he scored 883 runs in 42 matches at an average of 28.48. He also served as a national selector for a couple of years and was reappointed to the panel in 2008.
