BCCI Owes 4800 Crores To Deccan Chargers For Wrongful Termination?

Former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Deccan Chargers have managed to win the wrongful termination case against the BCCI and it has now become a huge disappointment for the board. According to the recent reports of the Economic Times, the Bombay High Court has ordered the BCCI to pay a huge amount of ₹4,800 crores as compensation in a verdict that was delivered on Friday.

Deccan Chargers, who won franchise rights for the tournament in 2007, were among the original first eight franchises to take part in the inaugural edition of the cash-rich league. They even went on to win the coveted trophy in the 2009 edition of the IPL which took place in South Africa.

The franchise was eventually terminated and the team was sold to Sun Network, who started a new franchise based out of Hyderabad itself which is now known as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The original case started way back 8 years ago when the board terminated the agreement with the franchise. The retired justice CK Thakkar has found the decision eventually termed ‘unlawful’.

Another franchise, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, had also won a similar wrongful termination case against the BCCI and the board was ordered to pay ₹850 crores as compensation but both the parties have looked to settle the matter without much success.

According to the recent reports, preparations have already been started in UAE for training sessions for hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The rumors making rounds regarding the circumstances of a possible happening of the IPL have maybe come to an end. The upcoming edition of the cash-rich league is all set to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In last month or so, the case of COVID-19 has increased exponentially in India and BCCI has to move the tournament out of the country as it is almost impossible to organize the league in India in near future.
