In a concerning moment for Team India, captain Shubman Gill was forced to retire hurt on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test after suffering a neck spasm. The incident occurred shortly after his arrival at the crease, following the dismissal of Washington Sundar in the 35th over, when India was beginning to gain momentum in their first innings.

Gill made a confident start, settling in with a stylish boundary off Simon Harmer. However, his innings came to an abrupt halt during the follow-through of a sweep shot that seemed to jar his neck. He immediately reached for the affected area, removed his helmet, and signalled for medical attention. The team physio was quick to respond, conducting an on-field assessment, but Gill eventually walked off the pitch visibly in discomfort.

This setback came at a crucial juncture for India. In the same session, Harmer had already rattled the side by dismissing a well-set Washington Sundar, caught brilliantly by Aiden Markram at slip. Gill’s early exit meant India lost momentum, with three wickets falling in quick succession and the opposition sensing an opportunity to capitalize.

Despite the captain’s brief stay at the crease—facing only three balls—India managed to eke out a first-innings lead. However, the pressure mounted as wickets continued to tumble after Gill’s departure. His ongoing treatment and availability became a point of concern for the team management and fans alike, especially considering his pivotal role as both a top-order batter and team leader.
India will hope Gill recovers swiftly, as his presence will be vital in shaping the outcome of this high-stakes Test match.
