The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that Rishabh Pant will not don the gloves on Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s due to an injury to his left index finger. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter sustained the blow on the opening day and is currently under the supervision of the BCCI medical team. Dhruv Jurel, who stepped in as a substitute on Day 1, will continue behind the stumps.

“Rishabh Pant is still recovering from the hit on his left index finger. The BCCI medical team continues to monitor his progress. Dhruv Jurel will continue to keep wickets on Day 2,” read the official statement from the board.

Pant’s injury occurred during the 34th over of England’s innings when he dived full-stretch to stop a wayward delivery down the leg side from Jasprit Bumrah. Although he got a glove on the ball, it escaped toward fine leg, allowing England to steal a couple of runs. Pant was seen in immediate pain, grimacing and requiring medical attention on the field.

Though he resumed briefly, it was clear the discomfort lingered. After one over, he exited the field, prompting the young Jurel to take over duties from the 35th over. The Indian camp remains uncertain about Pant’s return, with his recovery being monitored closely.

Before the injury setback, Pant had already made his mark. In the 14th over of the day, he claimed two brilliant catches to dismiss England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. Crawley’s wicket helped Pant set a new benchmark—he now holds the record for the most catches by an Asian wicketkeeper in Tests played in England, surpassing Kamran Akmal and MS Dhoni with 40 catches in just 12 Tests.

His absence, if prolonged, could significantly impact India’s plans, especially given his recent form both with the gloves and in leadership behind the stumps.
