The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly extended the contract of Ajit Agarkar, Chairman of the All-India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, for another year. This extension means Agarkar will now continue in his role until June 2026, a move that reflects the board’s satisfaction with his leadership despite India’s mixed results across formats in recent years.

Agarkar, who took over as chief selector in July 2023, has overseen squad selections for several marquee tournaments, including the Asia Cup, ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. His most recent assignment came earlier this week when he announced a 15-member squad for the T20 Asia Cup 2025, led by Suryakumar Yadav.
The 46-year-old former India pacer has often found himself at the centre of criticism from both fans and experts, particularly for the exclusion of certain in-form players. However, BCCI officials remain focused on long-term outcomes, with the team’s performance in upcoming tournaments expected to validate or challenge the panel’s decisions.

Agarkar currently heads a selection panel that includes S. Sharath, Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra, and Subroto Banerjee. According to reports, Sharath may soon vacate his position, while the others are likely to continue alongside Agarkar. A BCCI official, quoted by The Indian Express, confirmed: “Under his tenure, the Indian team has won titles and navigated transitions in Tests and T20s. The BCCI extended his contract till June 2026, and he accepted the offer a few months back.”

Looking ahead, Agarkar faces several crucial assignments. His biggest responsibility will be selecting India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Beyond that, his panel will also play a decisive role in shaping the future of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs, with both legends nearing the twilight of their international careers.
In terms of workload, India’s schedule under Agarkar’s extended tenure is packed. Apart from the T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue are slated to play 18 T20Is, nine ODIs—three in Australia and six at home against South Africa and New Zealand—along with multiple Test series.

Notably, India will host the West Indies and South Africa for two Tests each starting October 2, 2025, further testing the depth and balance of the squads Agarkar and his team will put together. With stability at the helm of the selection committee, BCCI is banking on Agarkar’s vision to steer Indian cricket through a transitional yet defining phase.
