The selection panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shortlisted ten names for the interview of the head coach role of Indian women’s cricket team. While the interview has been scheduled on Thursday (December 20) at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, some big names are Ramesh Powar, Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs.
After Ramesh Powar’s term ended at the end of this November, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn’t offer him for a contract extension and immediately started the process of finding the new head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team.
Before the upcoming interview, the BCCI announced the deadline to send the application for this important role and it was the December 14. According to some reports, BCCI has received 28 applications for this role.
Prior to the important interview, the BCCI has shortlisted some names for the upcoming interview. Among the 10 foreigners who have applied for this role, the 2011 India’s (men’s) World Cup-winning head coach Gary Kirsten has been shortlisted along with Herschelle Gibbs, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Brad Hogg and Trent Johnston. The other foreigners – Dav Whatmore, Owais Shah, Colin Siller and Dominic Thornely have failed to make the shortlist for the upcoming interview.
In the meantime, the present Pakistan women’s cricket team’s head coach Mark Coles withdrew his name just ahead of the interview.
On the other hand, among the Indians, Venkatesh Prasad, Manoj Prabhakar and WV Raman have made their name to the shortlist along with the previous head coach Ramesh Powar himself. Though the BCCI hasn’t offered him for the contract extension, the women’s T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and the T20I vice-captain Smriti Mandhana have written to the BCCI on Powar’s support and later, Powar has applied for that role.
The ad-hoc committee that will take the interview of the shortlist candidates on Thursday will comprise by the former Indian cricketers Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.
