BCCI Stops All Cricket, Suspends Major Tournaments

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that all ongoing domestic matches will be stopped and many tournaments have been put on hold due to the spread of the coronavirus in India.

In a statement released by the BCCI, “In view of the ongoing Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the BCCI on Saturday announced that all matches of the Paytm Irani Cup, Senior Women One-Day Knockout, Vizzy Trophy, Senior Women One-Day Challenger, Women Under 19 One-Day knockout, Women’s Under 19 T20 League, Super League and knockout, Women Under 19 T20 Challenger Trophy, Women Under 23 knockout, Women’s Under 23 One-Day Challenger have been put on hold till further notice.”

The whole world has been significantly affected due to the widespread of Coronavirus. More than 140,000 people have tested positive for the deadly virus with death tolls rising up to over 5,400 deaths. The widespread outbreak of CoronaVirus has affected many sporting events across the globe.

The cricketing world has been severely compromised because of the same.  England had canceled their tour to Sri Lanka. The South African team is ready to fly back home as their ongoing ODI series against hosts India is called off. The Black Caps are also set to return back to their home country leaving the ODI series against host’s Australia unfinished. Neighboring country Pakistan’s PSL is also set to be played behind closed doors with the threat of Corona Virus looming around on places of mass gatherings.

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which was all set to begin on March 29 has been postponed and rescheduled to begin from April 15 onwards. Just like the last day of the Ranji Trophy final between Bengal and Saurashtra, the matches are all expected to be played in empty stadiums.
