The BCCI has called India head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman to its Mumbai headquarters on Thursday, September 3, for a detailed review of the national team’s recent performances and player fitness management. The meeting, confirmed on Wednesday, September 2, is expected to focus on India’s disappointing results overseas and the handling of player availability ahead of a busy international calendar.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had previously indicated that a formal review would be held following India’s difficult tours of Ireland and England. India’s recent overseas campaign has raised several concerns. In June, the team suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ireland in a two-match T20I series, bringing an end to their impressive run of 16 consecutive unbeaten T20I series over nearly three years.
The England tour then added to the pressure. India lost the five-match T20I series 4-0, including a heavy 125-run defeat in Nottingham, before going down 2-1 in the ODI series. The results have prompted the BCCI to take a closer look at the team’s preparation, performance and decision-making.

Player fitness and workload management are expected to be among the biggest talking points. Several key players have missed important assignments because of injuries or delayed recoveries. Jasprit Bumrah aggravated a left knee issue and was ruled out of the Sri Lanka tour, while Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan also faced fitness-related setbacks.
Reports have also suggested that the selection committee was not informed about Bumrah’s unavailability for a scheduled tour on at least one occasion. The team management has separately raised concerns about IPL workloads, particularly when players arrive for international assignments without being fully fit.

The issue has become even more important with the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are scheduled to undergo fitness assessments on September 9, with their availability still subject to clearance. Hardik Pandya’s long-term fitness will also be discussed. The selectors remain keen to have the all-rounder available for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but his current bowling workload remains a concern, with reports suggesting he can manage only five or six overs in an ODI at present.
The meeting also comes at a time of uncertainty within the BCCI’s selection structure. Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector is due to end in September, and the board could make important decisions ahead of its Annual General Meeting on September 18. Whether Agarkar receives an extension remains unclear.

Laxman’s future role is also being discussed, with reports linking him to a potential BCCI Director of Cricket position that could expand his current responsibilities at the Centre of Excellence. With the New Zealand tour later this year and the 2027 World Cup forming the immediate planning horizon, Thursday’s meeting could prove significant for India’s next phase.
