As videos of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma sweating it out in training ahead of their possible return to India’s squad in October continue to dominate social media, a fresh report suggests the BCCI will soon sit down with the two stalwarts to discuss their international futures. According to Dainik Jagran, these discussions will play a decisive role in shaping the future of India’s ODI team.

While Shreyas Iyer has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to take over as the long-term ODI captain, the decision hinges on Rohit Sharma’s plans—whether he wishes to continue in the 50-over format and, if so, for how long.
India’s roadmap is clear: prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa. Having fallen heartbreakingly short in 2023 after losing the final to Australia, the focus is on finding a captain who can lead the side consistently for the next four years. The last time India lifted the ODI World Cup was in 2011, and the hunger to end the drought is stronger than ever.

Both Kohli and Rohit have already stepped away from Tests and T20Is, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee successfully overseeing smooth transitions in both formats. Agarkar himself has been retained as chief selector until June 2026, having earned the board’s confidence after India clinched two ICC titles under his tenure.

By the time the next ODI World Cup arrives in November 2027, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will be 40. Another report even suggests that the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia later this year could be their final one in the format.

Earlier this month, PTI reported that BCCI wants to chart out a clear strategy for the 2027 cycle. While no decisions have been finalized, officials are keen to try out younger players while planning for the big event. A senior BCCI source confirmed, “Yes, it will be discussed soon. Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan. We also need to give youngsters exposure in time.”
