BCCI to send two-member team to help Maldives cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is all set to send their top personnel Saba Karim and Abhay Sharma, India A fielding coach for a short visit to the Maldives to take stock of the sports in the Island Nation later this month. BCCI planned this after Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the President of Maldives attended a game during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Bangalore last month. However, this is not new for BCCI to help emerging cricketing nations as they have supported earlier to Afghanistan and Nepal. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have now become established as a cricketing nation, also have a home ground in Dehradun, India.

“The government asked us to help Maldives cricket and we are happy to do that. The officials will go there and see how best we can contribute to the game’s growth in that country,” a BCCI official said to PTI on Friday.

Meanwhile, during the IPL game in Bangalore Solih was presented jerseys by India’s cricketing icons Virat Kohli, the captain and MS Dhoni, the former captain, IPL COO Hemang Amin and Karim had given a presentation to the entire Maldives contingent as well.

While contacting to Sharma, he said that he has not got the full details of the trip yet. Moreover, cricket in the Maldives is governed by the Cricket Board of Maldives. They became a member of the Asian Cricket Council in 1998 and is an affiliate of the International Cricket Council in the same year.
