Fans were left intrigued after the BCCI dropped a cryptic video of Sanju Samson sitting silently on a chair, just hours before India’s final training session ahead of their Asia Cup 2025 opener against the United Arab Emirates. The clip immediately sparked speculation over Samson’s place in the playing XI, as his role faces scrutiny following the return of vice-captain Shubman Gill.

With Gill expected to reclaim his spot as an opener after an impressive IPL season, Samson could be pushed down the order, adding intrigue to India’s batting combination.

India, the defending champions, are looking to start their title defence with intent, and Sanju Samson’s selection has become one of the most discussed topics. Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, Samson has been a consistent performer, scoring over 400 runs in 14 T20Is. His versatility, powerful stroke play, and experience in both top-order and finisher roles make him a valuable asset.

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has also backed Samson, calling him a key figure in India’s T20I setup. Gavaskar suggested that the Kerala batter could be utilised at No. 3 or as a lower-order powerhouse while also taking on wicketkeeping responsibilities ahead of Jitesh Sharma.

Samson’s numbers support Gavaskar’s confidence. At No. 3, he has scored 4,136 runs across 134 innings at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 137, including 31 fifties and five centuries. His ability to clear boundaries with ease gives India flexibility in constructing their batting order.

With the T20 World Cup looming in 2026, the Asia Cup offers a vital opportunity for Samson to cement his place in India’s first-choice XI. For the Men in Blue, his form and adaptability could be central to building a balanced, explosive lineup for their title defence.
