Former England captain Ben Stokes has dismissed reports suggesting he could make a surprise return to Test cricket for the Ashes 2027 series against Australia. The veteran all-rounder took to social media to clarify that claims about a potential comeback were misleading, putting an end to speculation surrounding his return to England’s red-ball setup.

Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket during England’s Test series against New Zealand in June 2026, shocking fans and the cricketing fraternity. Since stepping away from international duty, the 35-year-old has been exploring opportunities in franchise cricket while maintaining his commitment to county side Durham.
According to a report by The i Paper, Ben Stokes is planning to play 10 matches for Durham in the County Championship next season. The all-rounder reportedly wants to prioritise his childhood club after playing an important role in helping the team secure promotion last summer.

His decision to focus on county cricket has fuelled speculation about a possible return to the England Test team, particularly with the Ashes scheduled to begin on June 18, 2027, in Nottingham. However, Ben Stokes has firmly rejected the suggestion that he is preparing for one final appearance against Australia. Sharing the report on X, formerly Twitter, Stokes made his position clear. “Please don’t waste your £1 to read this…it’s a completely misleading headline and no truth to the Ashes story whatsoever!”
The statement indicates that, despite his reported plans to play regularly for Durham, there is no confirmed intention to reverse his international retirement for the Ashes.
Please don’t waste your £1 to read this…it’s a completely misleading headline and no truth to the Ashes story what so ever!

Stokes’ commitment to Durham could also influence his participation in franchise competitions next year. He has signed a reported £264,000 deal with Adelaide Strikers for the Big Bash League (BBL) and is interested in playing Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States during the summer of 2027.
However, prioritising Durham could mean missing the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which is expected to overlap with the beginning of the English county season in April. Ben Stokes is also reportedly not planning to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) or The Hundred next year as he focuses on his county commitments.

His potential involvement in Major League Cricket presents another challenge. Stokes would require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and the competition could clash with the T20 Blast during June and July. The ECB has an interest in protecting its domestic competitions from losing contracted players to overseas franchise leagues during the English summer. Durham are reportedly exploring possible arrangements that could help Stokes participate in MLC, including registering him as a white-ball player or offering short-term, pay-as-you-play contracts.
Such arrangements could provide flexibility, particularly if Stokes later receives an opportunity to return to international cricket. However, any potential comeback would depend on his own decision and discussions with England’s management. For now, Stokes appears focused on Durham and his franchise commitments rather than an Ashes return. His public clarification makes one thing clear: reports of a planned Test comeback against Australia should not be treated as confirmed news.
