Mumbai Indians (MI) shocked the cricketing world by signing uncapped New Zealand batter Bevon Jacobs on Day 2 of the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 25. Known for their unconventional yet often successful picks, MI once again demonstrated their knack for identifying hidden gems.

Over the years, MI has built a reputation for pulling surprises at the auction. From signing Under-19 sensation Dewald Brevis before his first-class debut to acquiring Krishmar Santokie, the first overseas player in IPL history to debut before first-class cricket, the franchise has shown bold instincts. With five IPL titles to their name—the joint-most in history—Mumbai’s unorthodox strategy has often paid dividends.

The 22-year-old Bevon Jacobs himself was stunned to learn he’d been picked. “It was definitely a long shot. I woke up this morning to a huge surprise, and it was incredible to see. Honestly, it’s been overwhelming, but I’m looking forward to this opportunity and am deeply grateful,” Jacobs told RNZ.

Originally from South Africa, Bevon Jacobs knows cracking MI’s playing XI won’t be easy given their roster of world-class overseas players. However, he’s approaching the opportunity with humility and a thirst for growth. “It’s a massive opportunity. If I get game time, that’s a bonus. But just being there, learning from the best in the world, is invaluable. My focus is on absorbing as much as I can,” he added.

Jacobs’ T20 record reflects potential: 134 runs in six innings at an average of 33.50 and a blistering strike rate of 188.73. Although he’s yet to register a half-century, his power-hitting makes him a player to watch. Before joining MI, Jacobs will represent Auckland in New Zealand’s Super Smash 2024-25 season, starting with their opener against Northern Knights on December 26 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

“With the IPL a few months away, my focus remains on Auckland. I’m keeping my head down, working hard, and aiming to perform my best for my team here,” Bevon Jacobs concluded, showing maturity beyond his years as he prepares for his big break.
