Bevon Jacobs, the hard-hitting young batter from New Zealand, is already making waves at Mumbai Indians’ training sessions ahead of IPL 2025. A recent video shared by the franchise captured Jacobs in action, where he unleashed a powerful six that landed on the roof of the Wankhede Stadium—an early glimpse of the firepower he brings to the side.

Jacobs, who is yet to make his international debut for the Blackcaps, was bought by Mumbai Indians at his base price of ₹30 lakh during the IPL 2025 auction. It was a surprising move, especially in a bidding event where seasoned Kiwi stars like Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell went unsold. However, Mumbai saw potential in the 22-year-old, who had already showcased his big-hitting ability in New Zealand’s domestic circuit.

Reflecting on his selection, Jacobs admitted that both he and his family were caught off guard. “Oh! They couldn’t believe it. I think they were more shocked than I was. We were all in a bit of a mental state this morning [where] we just didn’t know what was going on,” he said after his name was announced at the auction.

Despite limited experience in top-level cricket, Jacobs has already demonstrated his attacking prowess. He was one of the standout performers in the 2023-24 Super Smash, amassing 134 runs in six innings at a staggering strike rate of 188.73. His explosive 20-ball 42 in the opening match of the tournament, featuring four boundaries and three sixes, was a testament to his fearless approach.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, in May 2002, Jacobs moved to New Zealand at the age of three. He progressed through Auckland’s cricket system before shifting to Canterbury, where he made his senior T20 and List A debuts. His first-class debut in November 2024 was particularly impressive, as he scored 75 in the first innings and 79 in the second.
So far, Jacobs has accumulated 476 runs in five first-class matches at an outstanding average of 59.5. In T20s, he has 423 runs from 17 games at a strike rate of 148.42—figures that suggest Mumbai Indians may have uncovered a hidden gem for IPL 2025.
