Jasprit Bumrah’s unorthodox bowling action has often been celebrated as the X-factor behind his success, but it tells only half the story. Beyond the slingy release lies a sharp cricketing brain, one that constantly plots and executes plans to outthink the best batters in the world. However, that same unique action that makes him lethal also places a tremendous load on his body, increasing his vulnerability to injuries.

To sustain the demands of fast bowling, Bumrah had to make remarkable sacrifices early in his career. Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun recently recalled how the pacer’s journey nearly took a different turn during the Under-19 trials in 2013 at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Though Bumrah didn’t make the squad, his raw pace caught the eyes of the coaches. Yet, in an attempt to remodel his action, his speed dropped significantly.

“In 2013, Bumrah was part of the 30-member U-19 camp at the NCA. We tried to change his action, but while it looked smoother, the pace wasn’t the same. What’s the use of a textbook action if the ball doesn’t trouble the batter?” Bharat Arun revealed on the Bombay Sport Exchange podcast.

After discussions with physiotherapists and trainers, the conclusion was clear—Bumrah’s action was too unique to alter, but it would require him to build a powerful body to withstand the stress. That meant discipline, fitness, and giving up the comfort foods he loved.

“We told him he had to be like a bull to survive fast bowling. Diet, exercise, and sacrifices were non-negotiable. To his credit, Bumrah instantly changed. He gave up pizzas, milkshakes, and burgers overnight,” Bharat Arun said.

The story reflects Bumrah’s mindset—his passion for bowling outweighed every personal craving. Much like Virat Kohli’s fitness revolution, Bumrah showed immense dedication, trading indulgence for discipline. Arun added, “A Punjabi boy living in Gujarat, but his love for bowling was greater than his love for food.”

Today, that sacrifice forms the foundation of Bumrah’s career. His unique action continues to baffle batters worldwide, but it is his discipline, resilience, and willingness to adapt that have truly made him India’s spearhead in all formats.
