Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous start against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 54 of IPL 2026 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, stumbling to 53/3 at the end of the powerplay after a fiery spell from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The experienced RCB pacer completely dismantled Mumbai’s top order, picking up three crucial wickets in the first six overs and putting the five-time champions under immediate pressure.

Bhuvneshwar first removed Ryan Rickelton, who miscued a lofted shot straight to skipper Rajat Patidar at mid-off. Soon after, Rohit Sharma looked dangerous during a quickfire cameo, smashing 22 runs off just 10 deliveries and taking on Josh Hazlewood with aggressive strokeplay. However, Bhuvneshwar’s clever knuckleball brought an end to Rohit’s innings as the MI opener edged behind to the wicketkeeper.
The biggest setback came when stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav fell for a golden duck on the very first ball he faced. His dismissal added to Mumbai Indians’ growing concerns in IPL 2026, with the star batter continuing to struggle for consistency this season.

Earlier at the toss, Rajat Patidar opted to bowl first, citing the hard surface and favourable chasing conditions in Raipur. Despite RCB entering the contest after consecutive defeats, the skipper remained confident about his side’s approach.

“We will focus on our strengths and stay in the present,” Rajat Patidar said before the match, confirming that RCB retained the same playing XI.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, leading MI in the absence of injured captain Hardik Pandya, expressed confidence about batting first on the black-soil wicket.

“Runs on the board always create pressure on the opposition,” SKY said at the toss. However, Mumbai’s batting unit once again failed to justify that confidence, while RCB’s pace attack seized complete control early in the contest with disciplined bowling and relentless pressure.
