The glitz and glamour of the IPL auction often sees franchises shelling out top dollar for the biggest names in cricket. However, with immense pressure and high expectations, not every player can deliver on their hefty price tag. The recently concluded IPL 2024 witnessed some such cases, where talented players failed to live up to their expensive acquisitions.
While talent and experience are crucial factors, the pressure of hefty price tags can be immense. Sometimes, players struggle to adjust to different team environments or bowling styles. These cases serve as a reminder that big money doesn’t always guarantee success in the high-pressure world of the IPL.

Here’s a closer look at 5 such players:
#1 Rilee Rossouw (Punjab Kings – INR 8 Crores):
Rilee Rossouw’s unsold status in the first round of auctions raised eyebrows. But the Punjab Kings, in a bidding war with Delhi Capitals, secured him for a whopping INR 8 Crores. Unfortunately, his IPL 2024 started on a forgettable note, failing to register any significant scores initially. While he did find some form in the final three matches, it came a little too late to justify his hefty price tag.
#2 Spencer Johnson (Gujarat Titans – INR 10 Crores)
With their star pacer Mohammed Shami ruled out due to injury, Gujarat Titans went all out for a replacement. They initially targeted Mitchell Starc but backed out after a bidding war with KKR. Their alternative, the Australian pacer Spencer Johnson, however, proved to be a disappointment. Purchased for a hefty INR 10 Crores, Johnson leaked runs throughout his limited appearances, managing just 4 wickets in 5 games with a poor economy rate of 9.44.
