In one of the most bizarre and unexpected run-outs seen in recent domestic cricket, the Maharashtra Premier League 2025 witnessed a jaw-dropping moment during the clash between Raigad Royals and Puneri Bappa at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Wicketkeeper Suraj Shinde became the unlikely protagonist of a double-stump deflection that ended in a rare dismissal.

The drama unfolded during the Royals’ run chase. Siddhesh Veer, facing an outswinger from Ramakrishna Ghosh, attempted to glance the ball fine but failed to connect. The ball rolled past the bat, and Shinde, alert behind the stumps, collected it cleanly. Veer initially called for a quick single and then quickly changed his mind, sending non-striker Harsh Mogaveera scrambling back.

What happened next stunned everyone. Shinde fired a direct throw at the striker’s end. The ball hit the stumps and, in a freak deflection, ricocheted all the way to the non-striker’s end, shattering the stumps there as well. While Veer managed to dive back safely into his crease, Mogaveera, caught off guard, was short of his ground and ultimately run out.

The dismissal, though strange, was completely legal under MCC Law 38.4, which states that the batter is out if the wicket at their end is broken while they are out of the crease. In this case, Mogaveera’s lapse in awareness cost him dearly.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time such a freak incident has occurred. In the Bangladesh Premier League 2022, Andre Russell was dismissed in a similarly bizarre fashion, where a deflection from the striker’s end led to his run-out at the non-striker’s end.

While such moments are rare, they serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of the game and the importance of staying alert at all times.
