On this day, captaining Rajasthan Royals Shane Watson picked up his first IPL hat-trick and 2nd of IPL 2014 season. The match was played against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Ahmedabad, Rajasthan’s adopted home ground. The hat-trick still did not enable RR to win though as SRH managed to defend the smallish total.

The hat-trick by Shane Waston was not the usual one, it was a broken hat-trick. Watson first dismissed his counterpart Shikhar Dhawan on the last ball of 4th over of the first innings. He then bowling his second spell, returned to bowl the 17th over and picked two wickets in two balls to complete the 2nd hat-trick of this season. Watson took the wickets of Moises Henriques and Karn Sharma.

Surprisingly this was 2nd hat-trick in as many matches for Rajasthan Royals, both occurred at Motera. Previously it was Pravin Tambe took hat-trick in the last match against Kolkata Knight Riders in just two balls with one being a stumping off a wide.

Watson ended up with bowling figures of 2-0-13-3. Sunrisers managed to put 134/9 after 20 overs. Hyderabad looked down and out after posting a modest total but they came out all guns blazing and managed to defend the total with Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the attack.

Bhuvi provided the first breakthrough in the third ball of the RR innings and then took three wickets in the 18th over to break the chase completely. South African legend Dale Steyn (2/33) took two wickets while Karn Sharma, Moises Henriques and Irfan Pathan took a wicket apiece in a collective bowling effort to bowl out Rajasthan for 102 with one ball to spare. The result meant that Rajasthan skipper Shane Watson’s superb hat-trick went in vain
