The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made a significant announcement, confirming that Brendon McCullum, currently serving as the Test Head Coach for England, will expand his role to include leading the white-ball teams as well. McCullum, who has been at the helm of England’s Test squad since May 2022, has had his contract extended until the end of 2027.
Beginning in January 2025, he will oversee both the Test and white-ball squads, with his new responsibilities kicking off during England’s white-ball tour of India and continuing through the ICC Champions Trophy. In the interim, Marcus Trescothick will take on the role of Interim Head Coach for England’s upcoming series against Australia and their tour of the Caribbean later this year.
Brendon McCullum’s work with the Test team has garnered widespread praise, with former England captain Eoin Morgan strongly backing him for the white-ball coaching role. This move follows the resignation of former white-ball coach Matthew Mott after England’s disappointing performances in both the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides. This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace, and I’m eager to work closely with Jos (Buttler) and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place,” Brendon McCullum said.
He also expressed his alignment with Rob Key’s vision for a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule easing next year. McCullum is eager to help English cricket reach new heights across all formats, creating an environment where players can thrive and continue to compete at the highest level.
