During the fourth test of England’s tour of West Indies in 2004, Brian Lara scored the first quadruple century in Test cricket, a record which still stands untouched in the form of most runs in a test innings by a batsman.
Lara, who was also captaining West Indies back then, had won the toss and chose to bat at St. John’s, Antigua, after losing three tests in a row on the hands of the English. Lara came in to bat at No. 3 in the 14th over after Darren Ganga (10) was found wanting in front of the stumps by Andrew Flintoff.
Over a 778-minute long innings, he ended up scoring 400* (582) with the help of 43 fours and four sixes. He was well-supported by Ridley Jacobs, who scored his third Test hundred, 107* (207), with the help of eight fours and three sixes. In an innings where Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan also scored individual half-centuries, West Indies ended up scoring 751-5 dec. in 202 overs.
