England’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has taken a major hit, with pacer Brydon Carse ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a lingering left toe injury. The Durham fast bowler, who has struggled with this issue throughout his career, was notably absent from England’s training session on Monday ahead of their crucial must-win match against Afghanistan on February 26.

Although Carse was deemed fit enough to play against Australia last Saturday, his discomfort was evident, restricting his movement on the field. He endured a tough outing as Australia successfully chased down 352 with 15 balls to spare, finishing as England’s most expensive bowler with an economy rate of 9.85. The toe issue first surfaced during England’s recent white-ball series in India, forcing him to miss the final two ODIs.

Since then, the injury has worsened, and medical staff have advised him to undergo treatment to prevent further damage. As a result, he will miss England’s Group B clash against Afghanistan in Lahore and remains doubtful for their crucial encounter against South Africa in Karachi on Saturday. The injury also raises concerns over his availability for the upcoming IPL season, where he was set to represent Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“There’s still some time before the next game to fully assess what’s going on with Carsey. We’ll see how things develop over the next few days,” England’s Joe Root said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
