England pacer Brydon Carse attempted a peculiar distraction tactic to unsettle India captain Shubman Gill during the second Test at Edgbaston on July 2. But Gill, calm and composed, saw through the theatrics and refused to be rattled by the Englishman’s antics. Carse, who has been impressively disciplined with his line and length in the ongoing Test, found success with the ball when he removed Karun Nair in the 24th over.

Bowling with purpose and rhythm, Carse delivered a sharp short-pitched ball that forced Nair into an indecisive shot. The result: a thick edge to second slip where Harry Brook completed a neat catch.
However, it wasn’t just his bowling that made headlines. During the 34th over of India’s innings, Carse tried to unsettle Gill with a cheeky bit of gamesmanship. After Yashasvi Jaiswal took a single to hand over the strike, Carse altered his run-up and made a sudden hand gesture towards his left, likely to distract the Indian skipper.

Gill, however, wasn’t buying into the ploy. He pulled out of his stance just in time, leaving Carse visibly perplexed and acting as if he didn’t know what caused the interruption. On the very next delivery, Carse upped the mischief—this time sticking his tongue out mid-run-up before delivering the ball, which struck Gill on the pad.

England went for a DRS review after the on-field umpire remained unmoved. But replays showed a clear inside edge, and the decision stayed in Gill’s favour.

While Carse’s efforts to disrupt Gill’s concentration may have added some colour to the contest, the Indian skipper remained unflappable—a testament to his growing maturity and poise at the crease.
