The spotlight firmly returned to Cameron Green ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ second IPL 2026 fixture, as the Australian all-rounder resumed bowling in the nets after triggering widespread debate earlier in the tournament. Just days after questions were raised over his absence with the ball against Mumbai Indians, Green was seen rolling his arm over in a training session, offering a timely boost for the franchise.

The 26-year-old, who was snapped up for a hefty ₹25.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction, had found himself at the centre of controversy during KKR’s opening clash at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite being a proven seam-bowling all-rounder, Green was not used with the ball as KKR failed to defend a massive total of 224. The decision raised eyebrows instantly, with fans and experts questioning the team’s strategy.

KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane added fuel to the speculation in the post-match presentation. When asked why Green didn’t bowl, Rahane pointed towards external directives, saying the call was influenced by instructions from Cricket Australia. His response sparked criticism, with many debating the extent of influence national boards should have during franchise tournaments like the IPL.

Soon after, Cricket Australia clarified the situation, revealing that Green is currently managing a lower back injury. According to their statement, the all-rounder has been advised to temporarily avoid bowling as part of a structured recovery plan. “Cameron is rebuilding his bowling loads and is expected to return to full bowling fitness in around 10–12 days,” the board confirmed, adding that KKR management was fully informed about the situation.

This explanation provided much-needed context, but the conversation around team balance and player availability continued to dominate headlines. Green’s absence with the ball was particularly felt, given his track record. In T20 internationals, he has picked up 14 wickets, while in the IPL, he has 16 wickets from 30 matches — figures that underline his value as a genuine all-round option.

What made the situation more intriguing was that, prior to the MI game, Green had bowled in every IPL appearance of his career. His sudden omission from the bowling attack, therefore, stood out even more, especially in a high-scoring contest where an additional seam option could have made a difference.

However, the latest visuals from KKR’s training session ahead of their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens have shifted the narrative. Green looked comfortable while bowling, indicating that his recovery is progressing well. While it remains uncertain whether he will be cleared to bowl in the upcoming fixture, the signs are undoubtedly positive for the team.

From a tactical standpoint, Green’s return to bowling could significantly strengthen KKR’s balance. His ability to contribute in both departments allows the team greater flexibility in team selection and match strategy — a crucial factor in a tournament as competitive as the IPL.

For now, KKR will be cautiously optimistic. Managing workload while ensuring peak performance is a delicate balancing act, especially with international commitments in mind. But if Green regains full fitness soon, it could prove to be a turning point in KKR’s IPL 2026 campaign. As the season unfolds, all eyes will remain on how the franchise integrates one of their biggest investments — and whether Cameron Green can deliver on both fronts when it matters the most.
