Legendary Sri Lankan pace bowler Chaminda Vaas said that Indian captain Shubman Gill is India’s best batter over the past few years ahead of the two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and India. Gill did well in the ODI format since his international debut in 2019, with a stunning overall batting average of over 60 at a strike rate of 100.95 in 67 matches as well. However, Gill struggled for consistency in the longer format before taking over as captain in the middle of last year. Ever since, he has averaged an extraordinary 82.76 with six centuries in nine Tests as well.

Talking about Gill, Vaas told Revsportz: “Shubman Gill will be the key, especially in the first Test in Galle. He has the temperament. Once he gets going, it is very difficult to get him out. I’ve seen him bat, and he is a brilliant player. He is the best I have seen in India over the last few years. Shubman Gill has been performing really well.”

“Even though Virat and Rohit are not there, India still have a powerhouse of talent. They have so many good, upcoming cricketers, eager to perform and waiting for their opportunities,” he again added.

Chaminda Vaas also believes the Indian management will have a plan for injured pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the cards. However, Bumrah has been dealing with injuries over the past few years, resulting in his absence from several important series, including the upcoming Sri Lankan Test series as well.

“I think India will have a plan for the next 50-over World Cup. He will be a different bowler when it comes to Test cricket compared to One-Day cricket. But being a fast bowler, you need to have a proper recovery process and get back into the game gradually. There is no doubt that he is the best in the world at the moment when it comes to Test cricket. Over the years, India has produced so many good fast bowlers. I think Siraj is also one of the best when it comes to bowling on subcontinental wickets. India have a powerhouse of fast bowlers,” he concluded.
