Former India fast bowler and ex-chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has come forward to defend Jasprit Bumrah amid growing criticism over the pacer’s workload management. Sharma stressed that Bumrah is not making independent calls about when to play or rest but is instead following the directions of India’s medical and support staff, who are best equipped to judge a player’s fitness.

Bumrah, widely regarded as the best fast bowler in world cricket today, has been at the centre of debate ever since India’s five-match Test series against England. Ahead of the prestigious Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, the pacer informed the selectors that he would be available for only three of the five Tests to minimise the risk of injury and manage his body across formats.
True to his word, Bumrah featured in the first, third, and fourth Tests, where he delivered 119.4 overs and claimed 14 wickets. Despite his strong individual performance, India failed to win any of the matches he played, and his absence from the fifth Test—where India could have pushed for a decisive series win—sparked outrage among fans and pundits.

Many questioned his commitment, suggesting that India’s pace spearhead was prioritising longevity over national duty. Chetan Sharma, however, dismissed such criticism. Speaking during the signing ceremony of Prasar Bharati’s deal with CricViz for “The Great Indian Cricket Show” on Doordarshan, Sharma drew an analogy to highlight why players must respect the medical team’s advice.
“If the doctor prescribes antibiotics, you take them. Similarly, if physios or the medical staff tell a player to manage workload, then one must listen because they are the better judges,” Chetan Sharma explained.
Sharma also praised India’s overall showing in the Test series under Shubman Gill’s leadership, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He said he was immensely proud of the young side’s resilience and believes India are well-placed to dominate in upcoming tournaments. With the Asia Cup 2025 (T20 format) approaching, Sharma expressed full confidence that India would lift the trophy.

“The way this team played in England, I’m really proud. I’m confident we will win the Asia Cup and carry that momentum into the 2026 T20 World Cup at home,” he said.
The Asia Cup squad is set to be announced on August 19, and naturally, questions were raised about whether Shubman Gill should be part of the 15-member squad. Chetan Sharma, though no longer chairman of selectors, diplomatically deferred to the current panel.

“That’s for the selectors to decide. India has so much talent that even our top-30 cricketers are world-class. Whoever they pick, I’m sure it will be the best possible squad for the country,” he remarked.
For now, Sharma’s words offer strong backing for Bumrah, reinforcing the idea that India’s medical team, not the players themselves, dictates workload plans. With India’s eyes set on upcoming ICC events, the message from Sharma is clear—trust the process, back the players, and focus on the bigger picture.
