India started the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy on a high note, securing a commanding 295-run victory against Australia in the first Test at Perth. Dominating in all departments, the team showcased several memorable performances that have already become highlights of the series. From Yashasvi Jaiswal’s masterful 161 to Virat Kohli’s 81st international century, the match was a treat for fans. However, one knock that sparked significant discussion was KL Rahul’s gritty second-innings performance.

Stepping in as an opener in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma, who missed the game for personal reasons, Rahul impressed with a composed 77 off 176 deliveries. His knock not only stabilized India’s innings but also reignited debates about his place in the lineup. Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara weighed in on the discussion, advocating for Rahul to remain in the top order even with Rohit’s return.

“I believe KL should stay in the top order,” Cheteshwar Pujara shared with ESPNcricinfo. “If Rohit wants to open, then KL can bat at No. 3. Otherwise, I feel we should continue with KL and Yashasvi as openers, allowing Rohit to slot in at No. 3 and Shubman at No. 5. Rahul’s game is best suited for the top order, and I hope we don’t shuffle the batting order unnecessarily.”

As for Shubman Gill, who has recovered from injury and is available for the second Test, Pujara suggested he take the No. 5 position in the lineup. He explained that the slot would allow Gill to thrive while offering strategic depth to the batting order.

“Ideally, Gill should bat at No. 5. It’s a position where he can play his shots and adapt to the game’s flow. If he comes in after 25-30 overs, he’ll be able to play his natural game comfortably. This also safeguards Rishabh Pant, ensuring he doesn’t face the new ball if early wickets fall. Gill’s technique is well-suited to handle tricky situations while complementing Pant’s counter-attacking style later,” Cheteshwar Pujara added.
