Cheteshwar Pujara has recommended that Rohit Sharma continue batting at No. 6 in the Indian lineup, prioritizing the future of Indian cricket. Rohit, who sacrificed his opening spot in the second Test against Australia in Adelaide to allow the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to retain their places at the top, has been struggling with the bat in the ongoing 2024-25 season.
Despite his leadership role, Rohit’s struggles are evident, with an average of just 11.83 from six Tests. After missing the first Test in Perth due to paternity leave, he returned in the second Test, only to register scores of three and six in the two innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara, however, believes that Rohit’s experience and game awareness could help him rediscover his form. He suggested that the 37-year-old should focus on adopting a more positive approach at the crease and work on his footwork ahead of the third Test, which is set to begin on December 14 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
“Rohit has had a challenging start in Australia, and the pressure is on him to perform. But a player like him, who knows his game well, will need to be more positive and focus on his footwork,” Cheteshwar Pujara said in a video shared by ESPNcricinfo. He added that a slightly bigger stride could make a difference in helping Rohit tackle the stump line, which has troubled him, leading to dismissals like bowled and LBW.

Pujara also expressed confidence that Rohit should continue batting at No. 6, suggesting that the long-term future of Indian cricket lies in the hands of young players like Rahul, Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill. With these promising talents already showing great form, Pujara feels it would be wise for Rohit to maintain his spot lower in the order, keeping the team’s future in mind.
