Pujara has now faced 3,609 deliveries in 28 innings against Australia in the past decade so far, and with this, he has surpassed England captain Joe Root, former England opener Alastair Cook, and his skipper Virat Kohli. While Root has faced 3,607 balls (28 innings) against Australia in the last 10 years or so, Cook played 3,274 deliveries (40 innings) and Virat Kohli 3,115 balls (35 innings).

Chetshwar Pujara had forged a solid 68-run partnership for the 3rd wicket with Virat before being getting out to Nathan Lyon at the stroke of Tea on Day 1 of the Adelaide Test. That’s the 10th time Lyon managed to get the prized wicket of Pujara in Tests, most by any bowler in International cricket.

Kohli is currently unbeaten at unbeaten on 67 off 172 balls and is accompanied by his deputy – Ajinkya Rahane (32* off 75). India got off to an awful start as Mitchell Starc got rid of the opener, Prithvi Shaw, off the second ball of the match. Pujara walked out to bat in the first over itself after Shaw was dismissed for a 2-ball duck.

Earlier in the innings, Pujara got one lifeline when he edged Starc in the same over but the ball fell just short of diving Australian captain Tim Paine behind the wickets. Mayank Agarwal looked confident while he was at the crease, but Pat Cummins cleaned him up with a peach of a delivery in 18th over.
