Cheteshwar Pujara has been showcasing remarkable form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024, amassing an impressive 673 runs from 10 innings at an astounding average of 74.78. His standout performance includes a monumental knock of 243 not out against Jharkhand in Rajkot, solidifying his credentials for a return to the national team.

Frustrated by his omission since the World Test Championship final last year, Pujara refuses to let age be a barrier. “Age is just a number,” he declares, citing James Anderson’s continued brilliance at 41 and Novak Djokovic’s claim that “35 is the new 25.”

“Dynamics of the game is changing and players are getting fitter,” Cheteshwar Pujara argues. “I don’t think age is any longer a barrier, particularly for players like me who only play one format.” He emphasizes the importance of maintaining fitness, stressing it applies to both youngsters and veterans.

Adapting his batting to different conditions is another key aspect of Cheteshwar Pujara’s philosophy. He acknowledges the difference in English pitches and respects the need to be cautious with the new ball. However, he clarifies, “On pitches in India that are good, I don’t take time to get to the 50s.”

His immediate focus is on guiding Saurashtra to the Ranji knockout stages. “The matter is about having the same passion,” he says, be it playing for Saurashtra, Sussex, or his club. He recalls a recent century against quality bowlers, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the game.

Currently, Saurashtra sits comfortably at No. 3 in Elite Group A, with one last match against Manipur before the knockout stages begin. With his Ranji form as a springboard, Pujara hopes to convince the selectors that age is just a number and his hunger for runs and Test cricket remains as strong as ever.

However, the competition for places in the Indian Test team is fierce. Cheteshwar Pujara will need to translate his domestic form into consistent performances against international bowlers to reclaim his spot in the national setup. Whether he can overcome the challenges and age-related perceptions remains to be seen, but his determination and passion are undeniable.
