Cheteshwar Pujara, one of the cornerstones of Indian Test cricket for over a decade, announced his retirement from all formats of the game on Sunday, closing the chapter on a remarkable career. The 37-year-old confirmed the decision on social media, having played his last of 103 Tests in 2023.

Speculation arose on whether the retirements of senior teammates like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma influenced Pujara’s choice. Speaking to PTI, he explained, “When I was in the UK, I was looking forward to the season. But once I came back home and began settling in, I wanted to discuss with my family, friends, and colleagues what they thought about me playing this season.”

Cheteshwar Pujara added, “I knew that if I played another season, I would be holding a spot in the team, and I wasn’t 100 percent sure I wanted to commit to the entire season. I felt it was the right time to step aside and give a younger player the opportunity to be part of the Saurashtra team.”

Renowned for his resilience at the crease, Cheteshwar Pujara faced an astounding 16,217 balls in Test cricket, often allowing players like Kohli to express themselves freely at the other end.

On Kohli’s remark that Cheteshwar Pujara made his job easier at number four, he humbly said, “It’s a nice compliment from Virat. If he feels I’ve made his life easier, I’m proud. A top-order batsman’s role is to support those batting at four, five, and six.”

With Cheteshwar Pujara’s departure, India has struggled to find a reliable number three. Asked about emerging options, he said, “It’s hard to say at this stage, but India has many young, talented players. Sai Sudharsan has started his journey well, showing potential. Karun Nair also scored a 50 while batting at number five. Both have demonstrated promise for the future.”

Pujara’s retirement not only marks the end of an era but also underscores the importance of grooming the next generation to fill the void left by stalwarts who have defined Indian cricket for more than a decade. His legacy will be remembered for patience, grit, and a commitment that helped India maintain stability in the top order for years.
