After the Indian openers were in the session of itself owing to some brilliant bowling from the Australian pacers, India’s Test specialist, Cheteshwar Pujara showed impeccable temperament in the first two sessions of the day to keep India in the game. He was eventually dismissed by spinner Nathan Lyon for 43 runs which came off 160 deliveries, making it the 10th time that the Australian spinner has dismissed the India batsman.

No other bowler has dismissed Pujara more than Nathan Lyon in the longest format of the game. The bowler who has troubled Pujara the most after Nathan Lyon is England pacer James Anderson, who has dismissed him seven times. This is also the most number of times an individual bowler has dismissed a batsman in any India-Australia rivalry.

What was also a little surprising about Pujara’s dismissal on Thursday was that he decided to walk even though the umpire had not given it out. Pujara had edged a delivery from Nathan Lyon and Marnus Labuschagne took a catch at leg gully. But the edge was very slight and umpire Bruce Oxenford did not see it and the decision was given not out.

However, despite the umpire giving it a not out, Pujara had started to walk immediately after the catch, which prompted the host to go for DRS. As an after-thought, he looked up at the umpire and suddenly stopped.

Australia did not hesitate to take the review and Cheteshwar Pujara eventually had to go after a good knock. Prior to his dismissal, he struggled it out and tired the Australian bowlers with his grit. There were a few half-chances against the batsman, but his gritty knock kept India in the game after the openers fell cheaply in the first session of play.
