The Karnataka government has finally cleared the return of IPL to Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, but IPL 2026 matches will unfold under some of the strictest safety protocols ever seen at a cricket venue in India. After last year’s tragic stampede, authorities are leaving nothing to chance, implementing a comprehensive plan focused on crowd control, security, and emergency response.
According to officials, the stadium will operate below full capacity, allowing only 28,000 spectators despite its 35,000-seat capacity. This buffer is designed to ensure smoother movement and better coordination between law enforcement and event staff. Ticketing has also been tightly regulated, with 80% of tickets to be sold online and limited offline sales permitted only three days before each match.
The new system is a direct response to the chaos witnessed during the 2025 celebrations when an estimated 1.5 lakh fans gathered outside the venue, leading to overcrowding and a deadly stampede. Learning from that incident, organisers—including Karnataka State Cricket Association and Royal Challengers Bengaluru—have introduced structured entry and exit mechanisms.

A key highlight is the creation of designated holding areas outside the stadium. These zones will regulate crowd flow and prevent bottlenecks at entry gates. Additionally, multiple widened entry points have been set up to distribute spectators evenly. Fans will also receive colour-coded tickets linked to specific gates and seating zones, ensuring better tracking and minimising cross-movement within the stadium.

Technology will play a major role in monitoring crowd density. AI-based systems and heat mapping tools will track congestion in real time, allowing authorities to temporarily halt entry if needed. This dynamic approach is expected to significantly reduce risks.
Emergency preparedness has also been upgraded. A dedicated green corridor will ensure uninterrupted access for ambulances and fire services. Eight ambulances—four inside and four outside the stadium—will remain on standby, along with fully equipped triage centres and nearby hospitals ready to respond.

Transport management is another crucial focus area. Coordination with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited will ensure real-time tracking of passenger flow, with increased train frequency and additional coaches on match days. With these robust measures in place, Bengaluru is ready to host IPL 2026 safely, starting with the high-profile opener between RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28.
