During the second ODI of West Indies’ tour of United Arab Emirates in 2002 at Sharjah, even Chris Gayle’s hammering of the opposition bowlers was less as West Indies ended up losing the match by 51 runs.
Having won the first ODI at the same venue by 4 wickets, Waqar Younis, the then Pakistani captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Pakistan ended up scoring 232-10 in 49 overs. Shoaib Malik had scored his first ODI century, 111* (130), with the help of nine fours and a six. For West Indies, Ryan Hinds, Cameron Cuffy and Mervyn Dillon picked up a couple of wickets each.
Apart from Gayle, West Indies’ batting line-up never really got going. He ended up scoring 62 (46) with the help of eight fours and three sixes against the likes of Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akthar and Mohammad Sami. West Indies were bundled out on 181 in 34.4 overs. For Pakistan, Sami (7.4-0-44-4) had been the pick of their bowlers.
