England all-rounder Chris Woakes has opened up about Ben Stokes’ fearless mindset, revealing how the England Test captain often puts his body on the line for the team — a quality that’s inspiring yet risky. Woakes praised Stokes’ selfless commitment, calling him a “leader who gives everything for England,” but admitted that sometimes his approach “isn’t the cleverest,” especially given his injury concerns.

Recalling the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India at Old Trafford in July, Woakes said that Stokes bowled through pain despite knowing he wasn’t physically fit. Stokes delivered a stunning spell, taking five wickets in the first innings and another in the second, playing a pivotal role in England’s performance. However, it later emerged that he had sustained a shoulder injury, forcing him to miss the series decider.

“He’s bowling probably the best he’s ever bowled in his career,” Chris Woakes said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “He’s as fit as he’s ever been. But as he’s getting older, there’s always a risk of breaking down. At Old Trafford, he knew he was done — he was in pain but kept going. It’s not clever, but that’s Ben. He gives everything for the badge. As a leader, he always wants to be the one doing it.”

Stokes finished the India series with 17 wickets at an average of 25.23, showcasing his importance to England’s balance. Woakes added that Stokes’ bowling fitness would be critical for England’s upcoming Ashes series in Australia, where the conditions will test both his stamina and leadership.

Former captain Michael Vaughan, who was also present at the event, echoed Woakes’ sentiments, calling Stokes “one of the few English bowlers who can hit the right channels consistently.” Vaughan believes Stokes’ ability to sustain pressure with both ball and captaincy will be key down under.

When asked about England’s chances, Vaughan admitted he’d gladly take a 2-2 draw, considering it would be England’s best result in Australia since the 2010–11 Ashes win. However, he added that Stokes’ mentality won’t allow him to settle for anything less than victory.

“Ben wants to win that urn — this is his moment,” Michael Vaughan said. “He’s built this team to fight, to compete, and to believe they can win in Australia. That’s the mindset he brings — not just for himself, but for the entire dressing room.”
