England tightened their grip on the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford, as skipper Ben Stokes lit up Day 4 with a commanding century before Chris Woakes delivered a brutal double blow to India’s top order just before lunch. Stokes’ authoritative 141 off 198 balls powered England to a mammoth 669 in 157.1 overs, giving the hosts a daunting first-innings lead of 311 runs.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja stood out with four wickets, while Washington Sundar picked up two, but the rest of the bowling unit had a forgettable outing. Jasprit Bumrah, unusually expensive, conceded over 100 runs in a Test innings for the first time, and the trio of Mohammed Siraj, debutant Anshul Kamboj, and Shardul Thakur failed to make any real impact.

England’s momentum continued as Woakes struck twice within three overs of India’s second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to a perfect outswinger that took the edge and was brilliantly caught low at slip by Joe Root. Moments later, B Sai Sudharsan edged a tentative leave to second slip, leaving India reeling at 1/2. KL Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill survived a nervy passage of play, but the visitors still trail by 310 runs with only seven wickets in hand and an injured Rishabh Pant to rely on.

Earlier in the day, Stokes took the attack to the Indian bowlers, starting with crisp boundaries off Siraj and a fiery pull by Liam Dawson. Bumrah finally ended Dawson’s stay, but it did little to stop England’s march. Stokes brought up his 14th Test hundred—his first since the 2023 Ashes—with a stylish flick off Siraj and celebrated with a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Ged.

With Brydon Carse’s aggressive cameo and Stokes clearing the ropes multiple times against Sundar and Jadeja, England’s lead ballooned. Stokes eventually perished attempting one big shot too many, and Carse followed soon after, but the damage was well and truly done. England now stand just five wickets away from securing the series.
