The Competition Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 52.24 crore to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for anticompetitive practices in reference to the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights. This is the second time that they have fined BCCI after the same case back in 2013.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked for the penalty of Rs 52.48 crore to the board in their 44-page long order. This fine is 4.48 percent of BCCI’s total turnover in last three financial years. The average turnover from 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 years is around Rs 1,164.7 crore.

The order says “The assessment of the Commission clearly brings out that the impugned clause in the IPL (Indian Premier League) Media Rights Agreement has been pursued by BCCI consciously to protect the commercial interest of the bidders of broadcasting rights as well as the economic interest of BCCI.”
