Is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors’ roles going over for the next overseas tours?

The new BCCI constitution, which has been submitted to the Registrar of Societies of Tamil Nadu in Chennai in last week, has raised a question mark on the national selectors’ roles for the overseas tours.

According to the Point 26 (iv) of the constitution, it claims, “on an overseas tour, the cricket manager/coach, captain and the vice-captain shall constitute the selection committee. The administrative manager shall convene the meeting and keep a record of the proceedings.”

It means that the cricket manager/coach, captain and the vice-captain will have the roles to choose the full squad for the future overseas tours.

On last Saturday (August 1), when BCCI announced the 16-member Indian cricket team squad for the upcoming 2018 Asia Cup in UAE, the BCCI interim secretary Amitabh Chaudhary told that the clause needs to be interpreted constructively.

When Chaudhary was asked whether the selectors would still travel abroad when they won’t have any roles in the selections for the overseas tours, he said, “It depends on interpretation. It needs to be interpreted constructively and if it is felt collectively in the BCCI that the visits of these selectors to witness matches at international venues abroad does actually help or aid the process of selection, then it might be [considered].”

Meanwhile, the five-member selection committee is returning after the Supreme Court has recently defended for it and has ruled out Lodha Committee’s recommendation to decrease the number to three. It has further added that the eligibilities of the selection committee members have to be played a minimum – seven Tests or 30 first-class matches or 10 ODIs & 20 first-class matches.
