Controversy marred the proceedings on Day 4 of the World Test Championship final between India and Australia as Shubman Gill was given out in a contentious decision. Gill edged a delivery from Scott Boland towards slip, where Cameron Green dived to seemingly complete the catch. However, replays showed a part of the ball potentially touching the ground during Green’s follow-through. The on-field umpires referred the decision to third umpire Richard Kettleborough for further examination.

After reviewing multiple angles, Kettleborough made the controversial call to rule Gill out, leaving the batter, as well as his opening partner and Indian captain Rohit Sharma, visibly disappointed. Gill expressed disbelief as he walked back to the dressing room, while Rohit engaged in a discussion with the umpire, seeking clarification on the reasons behind the dismissal.

Rohit Sharma’s dissatisfaction with the decision was evident as he expressed his frustration upon seeing the decision displayed on the giant screen at the stadium. He continued to engage in a conversation with the umpire even after the dismissal.

The dismissal proved to be a significant blow for India, as both openers had made a promising start to the innings. Gill was batting on 18 off 18 deliveries, while Rohit was unbeaten on 22, displaying his aggressive intent with three fours and a six in the pursuit of a target of 444 runs at The Oval.

Interestingly, Boland had also dismissed Gill in the first innings with a superb delivery that deceived the opener. Gill decided to leave a ball pitched wide outside the off-stump, but it sharply moved in with seam-movement to hit the middle-stump.

Earlier in the day, Australia declared their second innings on 270/8 after an important partnership of 93 runs between Alex Carey (66*) and Mitchell Starc (41) for the eighth wicket. Ravindra Jadeja was the standout performer for India in the second innings, claiming three wickets for 58 runs in his 23 overs.
