The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise, St. Lucia Zouks were never known for their being a successful team in the history of the tournament as ahead of the CPL 2020, they only managed to reach the top-4 in 2016. However, in the 8th edition of the tournament, under the captaincy of Darren Sammy, they came out all guns blazing as they not only reached the semi-finals, they managed to win 6 out of their 10 matches this season and also defended the lowest total in the history of the tournament.

Before the CPL 2020, Zouks were treated as complete underdogs despite having in some match-winners like Sammy, Mohammad Nabi, Rostan Chase, Kesrick Williams, etc. In the earlier editions of the tournament, they always used to finish at the bottom two barring the 2016 edition because of which the fans had very little expectation from the team. It seems that in CPL 2020, their fortune also turned with the blue INDIBET jersey as they won both their games in that kit.

Zouks’ worries were intensified in the CPL 2020 when the South African players failed to take part in the tournament due to the restrictions in the rainbow nation. Hence, St. Lucia miss some crucial cogs like Colin Ingram, Anrich Nortje, and Rilee Rossow.

Despite all the difficulties, St. Lucia Zouks roared in the tournament like an injured lion. They managed to ink their name in the record books when they defended the lowest total in the history of the tournament on August 30, Sunday. While defending the low score of 92, they restricted the Barbados Tridents to a total of 89/7 in their quota of 20 overs.

Out of the 10 matches this season, Zouks witnessed four of their games affected by rain and one of them even didn’t witness a result. Out of the other three, St. Lucia lost two (both against table-topper, Trinbago Knight Riders) and they managed to win the other one against Barbados Tridents by 7 wickets (DLS method).

 Zouks’ journey in CPL 2020 so far has been special not only because they have won matches despite being underdogs but also because they took one match at a time reached the semi-final like champions. There is no denying the fact that this season has been dedicated to the bowlers of Zouks as three of their bowlers at the top-10 wickets takers of the season.

Out of those three bowlers, Scott Kuggeleijn is the highest wicket-taker for the franchise as he scalped 13 wickets in 9 matches at an average of 16. The other two bowlers are Kesrick Williams, who took to 13 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 20.15, and Mohammad Nabi, who scalped 11 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 16.55.

Those performances from the bowlers had helped the Zouks to win some close games like when they defended the score of 92 and another low score of 144 against Guyana Amazon Warriors, where they won the match by just 10 runs.

 Now, it will be interesting to see what these underdogs have to offer in the semi-finals because if they manage to register a win, then they will surely be heading into the finale like a boss!
