Cricket Australia to Run on Skeleton Operation amid Corona Crisis

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has affected the world severely. It has brought the world to a standstill with many countries being completely lockdown for safety and to contain the spread of the virus. Many major sporting events have either been postponed or canceled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic affecting the globe. The resumption of sporting events looks bleak due to the continuous increase of COVID-19 cases across the world. Due to the current situation, major cricket boards like BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia have incurred losses because of no cricketing activity.

As a result, Cricket Australia has announced it will be laying off most of its administrative staff. CA and will run a skeleton operation for the time being due to the coronavirus pandemic. Cricket Australia has informed majority staff members to remain home with reduced pay from April 27.

CA might reduce 20 percent of the staff’s regular salary. With no international cricket happening, there aren’t any sources of revenue for the cricketing body. Also with all international and domestic cricket postponed indefinitely, chief executive Kevin Roberts said the game had to cut costs.

In a statement as quoted by Times Now, Roberts said, “The impacts on the sports industry of the coronavirus pandemic are bigger than any one sport. Cricket Australia, like all sporting bodies, is planning for a return to training/play, although no one is certain when this will be possible at this stage, and many scenarios are being considered.”

Kevin Roberts is hopeful that cricketing action will resume by June 30. He is also optimistic about T20 World Cup 2020. CA is expecting the fans to flock in the stadiums once the world returns to normalcy. Australia’s cricketing body is et to host two major events– T20 World Cup 2020 and Test series against India.
